Queen of the Media Center






I am the queen of the Media Center! I survey my kingdom and just look at all the books I have at my disposal. Actually, I'm only the queen for 10 minutes every school day. But I love the time.

I work at Hopkins Middle School. For the first hour of the day, I use the Media Center as my work spot because I share my classroom with the computer teacher. I have to wait for his class to finish before I can get to my official spot. From 8 am to 9 am, I'm working at a computer in the Media Center.

At 8:50 am, the librarian has to lock the Media Center and go to the gym to serve as the locker room teacher since the PE teacher cannot oversee both the girls and boys' locker room. That's when I rise to power. That is when it is all mine.

Because I am in the Media Center, the librarian can leave it open and I am in charge for 10 minutes. There really isn't much traffic at that time so I spend my time just walking around and seeing what the library has to offer.

We are a small school yet the shelves are full of titles that I want to read. Today I picked Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech. The 1995 Newbery Award winner is the next step in my quest to read all Newbery Award winners but also to restore my confidence in the Newbery Selection Committee after reading Dead End in Norvelt. I just finished this year's winner by Jack Gantos and I didn't feel it met the standards I expect in the "author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children." I don't know why I didn't become a librarian. I love books and I love the quiet atmosphere of the library-at least it is quiet a great deal of the time.

I'm trying to read lots of literature for children & adolescents. So much of what is written now is not uplifting with lots of stories of vampires, zombies and children leading very troubled lives. If you have any titles to suggest, I'd love to hear from you.

    I spent 22 years as a media clerk in our local high school. I loved the job and all the books I got to read before they went on the shelves. Still volunter 1/2 day a week.

Living on the Ridge

 I was reading this book last week and it got me thinking about …. This quote is from one of my favorite podcasts last week- What Should I Read Next? When I heard that, I realized that I say that frequently.  Right now, I'm studying the growing of oranges.  This is how I got to my current topic of study-growing oranges. So "I was reading this book last week and it got me thinking about how oranges are grown here in Florida."  The book was Oranges by John McPhee.   Found out we live on "The Ridge".  A prime citrus growing area in Florida that runs from Leesburg to Sebring.  We live just north of Sebring.   Oranges are fascinating.  Did you know that ....? New Home But An Old Table

Tom and I took a big step this fall.  After several years of prayers, searching and dealing with our doubts, we made the move from our family farm to a condo.  This has been on heavy Tom's heart since his cancer diagnosis.  As we went through his treatments, it became clearer to us that we needed to have a home that didn't require  much work and maintenance.   We were helped in our search by our niece, Karey Mulder .  We looked at many condos the past two years.  We never found exactly what we were looking for.  Several places meet some of our dreams but none met them all -until this August when a condo came on the market in Leisure Creek Condominiums.  We knew immediately that this was the home we were looking for. We closed on our new home in late August.  Karey had a local artist make us a picture of our farm that we would be leaving.  She presented it to us at the closing.  It hangs proudly in our condo.
