UP Roadtrip 2009

Bonnie Washburn, my neighbor and dear friend in Caledonia works for a college textbook company and the Upper Peninsula is part of her territory. So Bonnie has combined work trip and an UP adventure and invited me to go along.

We left the Cabin early Monday morning and headed out to Bay Mills Community College.

We arrived a bit earlier than Bonnie's appointment so our first stop was the Dancing Crane Coffee House. What a pleasant surprise. I wrote about it in detail on http://sharethesault.blogspot.com/. I loved that place and hope to return often. While Bonnie called on clients, I went in the Bay Mills Library and even got my own library card for there. They have a great collection of Native American books.

After all that work, it was almost noon so I told Bonnie about a great place for whitefish and we stopped at Wilcox's for lunch. She loved it too. We had whitefish sandwiches, and she even had whitefish chowder.

Our next stop was Pictured Rocks near Munising. We went to Miner's Castle where you can walk out almost on top of the rocks. This picture was taken from there. We then hiked through the woods down to the Lake Superior beach along Miner's River. It was 1.2 miles and very warm. We were comfortable and not bothered by bugs. The hike back was all uphill and we were really sweating by the time we reached the top.

We drove on to Marquette before stopping for the night. It was a very warm evening and we parked down town and walked the waterfront. We found a great restaurant called L'Attitudes and ate outdoors on their patio overlooking the park and waterfront. What a wonderful treat.

Today Bonnie worked all morning and then we started exploring around Marquette. We went to the Old City Hall, the Marquette County Historical Museum and then took a walking tour of the historic home district. This is just one of about 20 homes we saw and enjoyed. I have many more pictures if you are interested. :)

We had stopped at the Marquette County Convention and Visitors Bureau and they recommended a hike up Sugarloaf Mountain for a spectacular view of Lake Superior and Marquette. We did that and this is us at the top. The fog had just moved in so we couldn't see the lake but it was still great.
After Sugarloaf we headed out for Houghton where we have just stopped for the night. We stopped in L'Anse for dinner and are plum tuckered out.

Tomorrow we are off to Copper Country after Bonnie finishes her calls on clients. If you have any suggestions about what to see, please email them to me at bbenedict07@gmail.com.

  2. Bren,
It was great to see Marquette pics. I see that they added a wooden lookout on Sugarloaf. That wasn't there before. I would love to see the other pictures of Marquette. Check out a bakery in L'Anse that sells huge cinnamon rolls. Maybe it is not there any more but it will be worth the spot if you can find it. :-) Joyce
